Every new step your baby takes makes you happy and excited. Simple things, from clutching your finger and smiling at you to uttering their first words. You record these moments to cherish for life. Although there is no definite time for a baby to be doing new things, it is very similar for most of them, no matter which culture they grow up in or how they are taught. Here’s what you should expect from your baby each month for the first year.

The first month is unfamiliar for both you and the baby. You are learning to hold your baby, feed them, change their diaper, and get used to the new lifestyle with the baby around. The baby is also going through changes as he/she is getting used to being in an exposed environment. Amidst all this, you are also excited about how the baby is responding to you, the way he/she smiles in sleep and how the baby is growing.

In the second month, as you ease into parenthood, you will notice physical changes in your baby; he/she begins developing the baby fat, their cheeks and thighs grow plumper and they understand your touch and odor. The baby develops a level of alertness as well. They stay awake for longer than the first month and become a little more demanding. By the third month, you will see a remarkable schedule pattern; they will start waking up at night for milk, smile back at you, and lift their arms and legs. They learn to hold the head a little more steadily and colors fascinate them. They are also able to fix their gaze.

With the beginning of the fourth month, your baby may start learning to hold things and reach out for everything. And by now they know how to grab attention. They may begin to roll over at this time.

By the fifth month the baby becomes assertive, they can suffer from separation anxiety. They learn to roll over and enjoy playing, they start laughing out loud and suck their own feet. By the sixth month your child knows how to roll over from his stomach to his back, he/she also recognize faces and voices. The baby also develops a taste for the things he’s eating.

Somewhere in the seventh month the little one starts crawling and scooting to pick up things to play with. It learns to express anger and happiness, learns to imitate faces, expressions, and sounds. By the eighth month, the baby starts sitting up without a back support, recognizes its name and responds when called, makes sounds in repetitive monosyllables, and even attempts to say ‘mama’ or ‘dadda’. It becomes shy and anxious in social setups and learns to clap as well. In the ninth month, your baby might attempt to crawl the stairs, imitate gestures, loves to play and starts understanding words like ‘yes’, ‘no’ in the language that is spoken with the baby.

With the beginning of the tenth month, the baby learns to stand by taking support from the parents or furniture, the legs develop strength. It recognizes its toys, identifies the ones they like the most. They also start understanding the effects of their behavior on others, using crying as the trick to get something they want. By the 11th month, as you are nearing the completion of one year with your baby, you’ll notice that your baby will love to play with water, not letting you pull them out from the tub. They become increasingly uncooperative, they love to explore, put things in their mouth, and touch everything that is in their sight.

By the time it’s time to celebrate your baby’s first birthday, he/she will learn to stand without any support and take their first steps. They will also attempt to speak a few words and enjoy the attention they get for doing that. They also try to help you out while you are dressing like pushing their hands into sleeves or pants.
